The Haunt of Fear was one of the most controversial comic books in the 1950s. Among the key titles in E.C. Comics’ stable of violent anthologies, The Haunt of Fear was hosted by the Old Witch, the Vault-Keeper, and the Crypt-Keeper, an unholy trinity of terrifying and demented narrators that inspired numerous imitators even decades after E.C. Comics’ demise; even Stephen King paid homage to them in his 1982 Creepshow film and comic. In 1991, Gladstone began reprinting The Haunt of Fear in double-sized editions with a bonus issue of Weird Science in each one. As with all of E.C. Comics’ horror and science fiction comics, every tale ends with a surprise twist, and the art by Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Al Williamson, Wally Wood, and Joe Orlando, among others, are considered by many to be among the all-time greatest.
