Description

This is the second issue of Miss Lonelyhearts, a comic book adaptation of the second and third chapters of the Nathanael West novella of the same name. Miss Lonelyhearts, published in 1933, is Nathanael West's second novel. It is an Expressionist black comedy set in New York City during the Great Depression. In the story, Miss Lonelyhearts is an unnamed male newspaper columnist writing an advice column which the newspaper staff considers a joke. As Miss Lonelyhearts reads letters from desperate New Yorkers, he feels terribly burdened and falls into a cycle of deep depression, accompanied by heavy drinking and occasional bar fights.

Gabrielle Gamboa's work employs a personal lexicon of symbolism pulled from family history, rock and roll memorabilia, catholic iconography, and underground comic books to explore issues of cultural and ethnic identity, myth, and memory. She prefers to use traditional materials such as graphite, chalks, ink, and oils in contrast to the unconventional subject matter she enjoys.
