Merce Cunningham Dance Company carries on at River To River Fest in New York this Weekend

Our good friend Stephan Moore has been a member of the Music Committee at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for the last few years. He sent us the following:

Hi all,

As I am sure many of you have heard, my employer of the past 5 years, Merce Cunningham, passed away on Sunday. It has been a heavy few days at the studio, and the well-wishes have been pouring in, which is helping me and the whole MCDC family to get through it all.

MCDC is, by chance, performing three free outdoor shows this weekend in Lower Manhattan. David Behrman and I will be supplying the music, which is a huge honor and responsibility. The NY Times preview makes
it sound like I am dancing, but I am fairly sure that’s not what Merce would want! All the details at the New York Times.

Also, David and I will be performing some MCDC scores as part of the PS1 Warm Up series on August 8. Our set begins around 3pm. These are great parties, and the other bands on the bill are also worth seeing!

Peter Kirn of the essential Create Digital Music recently tweeted a link to this lovely tribute to Mr. Cunningham. The photo above is one I took in the storage basement at the MCDC basement in 2004. I think that’s some of John Cage’s stuff lurking on the upper shelves.
