Puppy Toss

Four issues of the Puppy Toss comics anthology Skim Lizard have been unearthed from the archives and are being sold to support the scholarship set up in Dylan Williams’ name at Portland, Oregon’s Independent Publishing Resource Center where Dylan was an instructor in their comics program.

The publisher, cartoonist and comics historian Dylan Williams, best known for his successful small press publishing house and distribution company Sparkplug Comic Books, died on September 10, 2011 of complications due to cancer. He was 41 years old. He was a good friend and inspiration to many people in the comic book community, including many of those who have worked with Wow Cool over our 23+ years.

Wow Cool personel occasionally attended Puppy Toss meetings and they generously allowed us late-night access to their computer to work on one of our early catalogs. There is something delicious about the fake competitiveness (and the real motivation to level-up) that can exist in such a creative hive as existed back then in Berkeley. Those type of situations are rare. Revel in your time.

Puppy Toss was formed in early 1992 in Berkeley, California. The founding members were Dylan Williams, Landry Walker, Scott Hsu-Storaker, K. Cappeli and Chris Hatfield. Later members included Gabby Gamboa, Ben Catmull and Eric Jones. Most of those involved had some connection to one of the Comic Relief locations. Sharing an office space -- including the still early '90s comics publishing house rarity a computer -- and working shows together, Puppy Toss may have been best known for its anthology Skim Lizard, which published in both mini-comic and standard comic iterations. The collective also shepherded comics by individual members, such as Williams' own mini-comic Horse. Puppy Toss was a bright spot in what many consider a mostly fallow period in comics publishing -- the business-wracked mid-1990s -- and signaled a move towards a collectivist ethos in comics making that remains in evidence today.  --Puppy Toss history adapted from Tom - The Comics Reporter - Spurgeon's

The Independent Publishing Resource Center facilitates creative expression and identity by providing individual access to the resources and tools for the creation of independently published media and art. Since its inception in 1998 the center has been dedicated to encouraging the growth of a visual and literary publishing community by offering a space to gather and exchange information and ideas, as well as to produce work. The IPRC is an Oregon 501(c)(3) Nonprofit organization.
